Aaron Rai Clinches Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a dramatic playoff following a rollercoaster final round of play.
The Englishman nailed a crucial birdie putt from just over eight foot to clinch the victory, echoing his only previous Rolex Series success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was likewise a play-off win over the same opponent.
Sunday's Play Excitement
The champion entered the final round with a one-shot lead over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 final round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
Fleetwood moved one shot ahead with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but Rai pulled level again on the 17th and then missed a ten-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the final green.
Play-Off Climax
This led to a playoff at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner triumphed to take the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even more person. To compete alongside him the last two days was really special,” stated the winner, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and maintaining focus, it’s hard to describe at the present how it is. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”
Notable Performances
The Northern Irish star found himself a bit too far to do, finishing a stroke behind in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 10-under final round of 62. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdies and an eagle.
Højgaard fired six birdie putts of his own, but his hopes of topping the standings were dented by a bogey on the 12th. English golfer Mansell produced an excellent final-round seven-under to end up tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
