At least 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Largest Law Enforcement Operation on Gangs
A minimum of 64 individuals were killed in a law enforcement action cracking down on the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's past.
Four security agents were among those killed during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives reported. More than 80 individuals were arrested.
Intense confrontations commenced when about 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization responded with armed resistance, igniting obstacles and using drone-dropped explosives, police representatives confirmed.
The UN Human Rights Office stated it felt "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Mission Consequences
The informal settlements adjacent to Rio's airport is regarded as the headquarters of a major illegal networks.
Local authorities stated no less than 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Numerous individuals were wounded, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Locals have likened the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the operation began.

The criminal network has been increasing their influence in the area, expanding narcotics distribution networks and power in the informal settlements.
Security forces stated over 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were seized in the raid, along with multiple guns.
