Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board

Board Resignation
Summers declared he would withdraw from public positions after Congressional panel disclosed his frequent communications with Epstein

Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is leaving the directorate at OpenAI, just several days after a batch of emails between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became public.

Summers stated in a release that he was "grateful for the privilege to have participated, excited about the potential of the enterprise, and look forward observing their development".

Summers, who formerly led the Ivy League institution, announced on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.

Email Communications

The recently released emails demonstrated that the economist exchanged messages with the financier until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 arrest for alleged trafficking of minors.

In another announcement, the technology organization said it accepted his decision to resign.

"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the insight he brought to the directors," the organization remarked.

Political Context

This development arrives after the two houses of Congress decided on Tuesday to pass a bill that would compel the federal prosecutors to release its records on Jeffrey Epstein.

The legislation will afterward proceed to the administration of President Trump for signature. The President has stated he expects to approve the bill, after changing his stance on the issue following pushback from his base.

Email Contents

A batch of financier-linked correspondence disclosed by the legislative panel recently included numerous prominent individuals in the Epstein's past associates, without implying any illegal behavior by those people.

The communications indicated that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often trying to link Summers to influential global figures.

Personal Accountability

After the correspondence were made available with the general audience, he stated he accepted "full responsibility for my ill-advised choice to continue corresponding with Mr Epstein".

He further stated that he hoped "to reestablish trust and fix relationships with the individuals most important to me".

Previous Positions

The economist occupied senior posts under two Democratic presidents; serving as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as director of the National Economic Council under the former leader.

He headed the university from the early 2000s and remains a academic there. When announcing his step-down from public roles previously on this week, he said he would persist with his teaching commitments.

Other Impacts

Following the economist's statement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a liberal think tank in DC where the professor was a prominent member, verified that the economist was no longer associated with the group.

Summers entered the directorate of the AI company, which makes the language model, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to oust its chief executive OpenAI's head.
