NBA game action

Miami scored 86 first-half points against the Grizzlies

Miami Heat secured a crushing 146-114 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial NBA match since guard Terry Rozier was arrested for suspected unlawful gambling.

Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was also detained in connection with a broad federal probe into illegal gambling. Both men deny the claims.

But, the Heat were not distracted as they recorded eighty-six first-half scores to be ahead of the Grizzlies by thirty-nine at halftime, the largest half-time advantage in the team's 37-year history.

Adebayo top-scored with twenty-four scores and later said Rozier had the support of the team.

"We support him. Full support," Adebayo stated. "You support him through and through. He's like family at the end of the day."

Miami head coach Spoelstra commented: "Terry is somebody who is important to everyone. He's had a beneficial influence on our locker room.

"We send our thoughts and support for him as he goes through the situation."

The Trail Blazers also won their first game after the detentions, with Brazilian Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Billups' non-attendance and guiding the squad to a decisive 139 to 119 win against the Warriors.

"We all had positive times with Chauncey and his coaching style," Splitter said. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."

League Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' by Arrests

Addressing the arrests for the first time, league head Adam Silver said he was "very upset" by the events of the recent days.

"There's nothing more important to the NBA and its fans than the fairness of the competition," he told Amazon Prime. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."

Silver further said an NBA investigation into Rozier's conduct in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he played for the Hornets against the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the betting companies," he added.

"We investigated that situation and were open about it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, found no evidence.

"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the league office can't do.

"So, we've been working with them from that point. And, of course, what they announced yesterday was an charge.

"Moreover 30 months later, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in fairness to Terry.

"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance in this case between protecting people's rights and conducting an inquiry."
