Italian Watchdog Criticizes Ski Pass Cost Increases as Totally Unreasonable

Italian consumer advocates are sounding the alarm over what they call entirely unreasonable cost hikes for ski passes this cold-weather period, warning that skiing could become a luxury reserved for the wealthy.

Significant Cost Rises Throughout the Country

Across the Alpine regions and breathtaking Dolomites in the northern areas to the slopes of Abruzzo, prices are set to rise by as much as 40% compared to prices from three years ago, according to recent analysis.

The prestigious Dolomiti Superski pass, which provides entry to all 12 resorts in the premium Dolomite area, will now set visitors back €86 per day during the current winter. In the popular Abruzzo resort, a single-day lift ticket is expected to reach €60, following substantial visitor surges last season.

Seasonal Pass Costs and Additional Expenses

Meanwhile, annual skiing tickets will vary between €755 per adult in the Abruzzo region to as much as €1,800 in the Aosta valley.

The cost of renting winter sports gear has also increased, along with hotel accommodations and restaurant prices throughout mountain resorts.

Consumer Group President Cites Unjustified Increases

Gabriele Melluso, leading the watchdog organization, stated that the cost rises—attributed by resorts to increased utility expenses, facility upkeep, and demand for better equipment—were entirely unreasonable and unacceptable.

"Both because Italian inflation rates are under control and energy tariffs, which had increased expenses for mountain facility managers in 2022, have stabilized at previous levels," he explained.

The president further stated that prices have now reached levels where less wealthy individuals are being forced to abandon their traditional settimana bianca, or winter vacation, altogether.

Visitor Decrease and Broader Context

He noted a sharp decline in alpine visitors during the current winter period, with 1 million fewer Italians visiting ski resorts compared to the previous year due to increasing expenses.

Even with these hikes, Italy remains a more affordable destination for skiing enthusiasts in western Europe compared to nearby Swiss resorts, France, and Austria.

International Event Background

The increasing worry over winter sports expenses comes as the nation gets ready to host the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics between the first three weeks of February. The nation's top diplomat, Antonio Tajani, announced on Friday that Italy had presented a plan to the United Nations calling for a "worldwide ceasefire" during the global competition.

"Through the Winter Games we must similarly convey a peaceful communication and dialogue... to stop warfare during the Games," he declared.
