Edwards and Gary O'Neil represent the early names under consideration to succeed the former manager as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pereira was dismissed on Sunday following the squad's ten-game without a victory beginning to the top-flight campaign.
And both candidates - each of whom have historic links to the club - are among the options to be evaluated by the club leadership.
Edwards is currently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a potential hurdle to his appointment at Molineux.
However the former Luton head coach - who played more than 100 of appearances for the club during his time as a player - is considered a strong contender for the vacancy.
The 42-year-old is said to have support from the club board as they start the process of hiring a fresh head coach.
O'Neil is additionally appearing as a unexpected candidate, although he would be a shock choice considering he was sacked by Wolves in December last year.
The ex- West Ham player is out of work meaning Wolves would not be required to provide any buyout fee.
