The beloved police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th installment, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-part series written by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The previous season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but official word only came recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

However, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the background, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless followers watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new season."

He added: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the news and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and became a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and producers indicated at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the corporation confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
