The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often characterized by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and supported its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about watching this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its prevailing sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
