The Owls Hit with 12-Point Deduction After Entering Financial Insolvency
The club's supporters labeled Wednesday as “a deeply emotional moment for the club” following the team was placed into administration under owner Dejphon Chansiri and deducted 12 points.
Financial Turmoil Results in Points Penalty
The Owls are confronted with likely demotion after the EFL’s penalty left them on -6 points, 15 adrift of safety. Team members and employees have not been paid on time over recent months, adding to the club's instability.
The appointed administrators are now in charge of the process aiming to sell club assets, including Hillsborough stadium, to settle outstanding debts estimated at £1m in tax. Soon after the administration announcement, stadium seating with the owner's name were taken down from the North Stand.
“Administration resulted from prolonged financial issues, poor oversight, and repeated failures to engage credible buyers the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust said. “Administration is not something to be celebrated. It needn’t have ended this way. But we're relieved the owner has departed.”
Manager’s Perspective on Fresh Start
Sheffield Wednesday's coach, Henrik Pedersen met the administrators along with his coaching team, players, and staff early Friday. The Dane said administration was required for a fresh start.
The manager emphasized “while difficult, this marks a positive turning point”, noting: “Recent months showed the situation was unsustainable. We need a fresh restart to use the potential of this fantastic club. Now optimism and hope for brighter days prevail. I envision a promising future for the club.”
Staff Insecurity
Club staff were emotional at the news, as the manager explained: “Uncertainty exists. Will wages be paid? What happens now? Will things improve? Will it not be better? Overall, there's hope for a shared future with the club.”
Continuing Money Problems
The club's condition worsened significantly in recent months when the manager Danny Röhl and several key players departed due to salary delays. The EFL expressed concern regarding financial health earlier this season.
Since then, Wednesday operated with minimal funds, using any income including league payments to deal with debts. With reports of an imminent winding-up order by tax authorities, the owner exhausted alternatives.
Administrator’s Statement
A lead administrator, Kris Wigfield from the insolvency firm stated: “Similar to other teams, the club sustained heavy losses for several years, previously covered by the owner. Because of mounting money troubles, the owner opted for administration allowing us to sell the club and ground as a whole, a positive development for fans.”
Government Reaction
Government official Lisa Nandy commented on the situation served as another reminder of the need for the independent football regulator, recently legislated. The regulator is expected to be in operation by the 2027-28 campaign.
“My club Wigan faced similar issues, so I understand fans want a quick solution,” she added.
Supporter Actions
Supporters avoided club shops and products this season with many absent during the Middlesbrough match as part of ongoing protests. Ahead of the Oxford game, the administrator and the supporters’ trust called on fans to reengage.
“The club’s most urgent need is stability and income, the trust said. Protest succeeded; rebuilding starts today. Every ticket bought, every shirt worn, every pie and pint enjoyed in Hillsborough helps the club rebuild. Real change is within our grasp – but only if we are prepared to seize it. It's time to back the team.”
Future Prospects
The trust said it expected strong interest from buyers while developing a supporter-backed purchase plan to ensure that “even in the worst-case scenario, the threat of liquidation will not be an option”.
The manager, once an assistant, said he was not resigned to relegation despite the tough situation. “We must modernize while honoring tradition, he said.
