The Showrunner Discloses He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would become a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
As the debut season of the hit program reaching its finale—and the next chapter already in development—the creative team opened up about the fan response and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Fan Response
It would be easy to get swayed by the constant speculation and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Will Vince Gilligan See the Ending of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff aren't taking cues by audience theories, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… in a way.
“We've developed some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to discard a solid concept for a better idea. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, one could always use the legendary finales?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
