Tragedy Strikes as Inadvertent Detonation at Police Station in Indian-administered Kashmir Claims Nine Lives
A catastrophic blast at a police station in Indian-administered Kashmir has led to the loss of nine people and wounding to thirty-two others, according to authority reports.
The incident took place when a cache of seized explosive materials inadvertently exploded during management operations.
Chronology of Events
The blast happened on Friday evening at the Nowgam security post, where explosive materials taken from the Faridabad area in the northern state of Haryana province were being kept briefly.
Regional law enforcement head announced that the explosives were scheduled for scientific analysis when a "extremely tragic" accident during management led to their explosion at approximately 23:20 local time.
Official Statements
Law enforcement officials verified that this was an "accidental detonation" and as opposed to a terror incident. "Different conjectures regarding the origin of this occurrence is unneeded," highlighted the police chief during a journalist meeting.
The police station suffered significant harm from the blast, with nearby constructions also being impacted by the strong explosion.
Impact and Fatalities
Several automobiles were "engulfed in flames and reduced to charred husks, with debris scattered across the site," according to authority statements.
"The power of the explosion was such that some physical fragments were recovered from adjacent homes, approximately between 100 and 200 meters from the law enforcement facility," stated an official source.
The bulk of the victims were law enforcement personnel, along with technical investigation team, two crime scene photographers, and a tailor who was with the team.
Government Action
The area's Regional Leader stated commiserations and declared that an inquiry had been ordered into the tragic incident.
"I have commissioned a probe to ascertain the reason of the accidental explosion. Profoundly distressed by the fatalities of important persons due to profoundly sorrowful accidental blast at Nowgam police station in Srinagar. My commiserations to the bereaved families. I pray for quick healing of the wounded," stated the leader on digital platforms.
