‘We Will Miss Him Terribly’: Meg Ryan Publishes Moving Tribute to Director Rob Reiner
Meg Ryan has published a heartfelt tribute to the deceased filmmaker Rob Reiner, who directed her in the hit rom-com When Harry Met Sally.
A Heartbreaking Event
Reiner was found dead with his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, at their home in Los Angeles at the weekend.
“How we will long for this man…” Ryan shared on Instagram, accompanying a photo of them together. “We thank you, Rob and Michele, for your belief in true love, fairy tales, and laughter. Your trust in people's goodness and your love for this nation are remembered.”
Court Case Developments
Reiner’s son Nick, 32, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and was in court today. He’s being incarcerated with no bail set. It’s been reported that Reiner’s daughter Romy discovered her father deceased.
“I have to believe that their story will not end with this impossible tragedy, that some good may come, some awareness raised,” Ryan continued. “Perhaps they would desire a legacy of hope and humanity, leading us toward empathy and tranquility.”
Children Share Their Grief
Reiner’s surviving children Jake and Romy released a message today. “No words can convey the constant, profound sorrow we feel,” they said. “Losing our parents in such a horrific way is a devastation beyond comprehension. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
Hollywood Tributes Pour In
Ryan’s co-star, Billy Crystal, also paid tribute to Reiner through a message shared yesterday alongside tributes from Larry David, Martin Short and Albert Brooks.
“His skill for comedy was unmatched, his ear for dialogue perfect, and his dramatic precision was sheer elegance,” the statement said. “For the actors, he loved them. For the writers he made them better. Freedom was his key offering. He listened to ideas and included you in the creative journey. They always felt they were working as a team. To be in his hands as a film-maker was a privilege but that is only part of his legacy.”
An Enduring Filmography
When Harry Met Sally was a hit with both critics and audiences in 1989, grossing more than $93 million worldwide and scoring Nora Ephron an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay.
Rob Reiner first encountered Michele Singer Reiner whilst filming When Harry Met Sally. The pair were introduced by Barry Sonnenfeld, a fellow filmmaker and pal.
Reiner’s extensive filmography also included classics such as Misery, Stand by Me and The Princess Bride. The director and his wife were together in marriage for 36 years.
